Across the cosmos, galaxies and their central black holes have long seemed to grow as partners, bound by a ratio so consistent it suggested a shared destiny. Now, a survey of more than 20,000 quasars has uncovered eight systems where that partnership appears to have broken down — black holes so disproportionately massive relative to their host galaxies that they force a reckoning with our models of cosmic co-evolution.
