In warm coastal waters, researchers have done something rarely accomplished before: they looked inside a living giant manta ray and confirmed the presence of new life. Using underwater ultrasound technology deployed non-invasively in the animals' natural habitat, scientists detected pregnancies in three of these vast, elusive creatures — a species whose reproductive biology has long resisted human understanding. The achievement matters not only as a technical milestone but as a moral one, for without knowing how a species reproduces, we cannot truly know how to protect it.
