In the heart of Lancaster, Pennsylvania, a six-gram juvenile bat clung to the side of a house for two days — a small creature carrying the weight of an entire species on the edge of vanishing. Rescuers from Raven Ridge Wildlife Center arrived expecting routine work and discovered instead a northern long-eared bat, a species so devastated by white-nose syndrome that its population has collapsed by 97 to 100 percent, earning federal endangered status in 2023. Her survival, uncertain and hard-won, is a reminder that the fate of a species is sometimes held in the most fragile of hands.
