On a Thursday morning in late summer, the mountains claimed one of their most devoted servants. Nirmal Purja — Nepali mountaineer, former British Special Forces soldier, and rewriter of what human endurance was thought capable of — was killed alongside at least ten others when an avalanche swept through Broad Peak's west ridge at 6,579 metres. He was thirty-eight years old, and had spent his life demonstrating that the limits people accept are rarely the limits that exist. The tragedy reminds us that the mountains do not negotiate with greatness.
