Pittsburgh pediatric doctor killed in home stabbing; suspect arrested

Dr. Idris Evans, a 46-year-old pediatric critical care physician at UPMC Children's Hospital in Pittsburgh, was killed in a stabbing attack inside his Edgewood home early Thursday morning. His wife was also stabbed and hospitalized in critical condition. Police arrived around 12:30 a.m. to find both victims suffering from knife wounds after what investigators described as an extraordinarily violent scene—bedroom furniture shattered, mirrors broken, the physical evidence of a desperate struggle.

According to court documents, Evans and his wife awoke to find a man attacking them in bed with a kitchen knife. The intruder, later identified as 32-year-old Elijah Hemingway, had entered the home through an open window on the third floor. During the assault, Evans's wife managed to shout to their two children—ages 8 and 12—to leave the house and run to a neighbor's home. At some point during the attack, Evans called the man by the name "Elijah," suggesting some form of recognition, though investigators have not yet confirmed whether the two men knew each other prior to that night.

Hemingway was found hiding in a nearby backyard with cuts to his hands, bleeding and concealed in an overgrown section of a neighbor's garden. He was taken into custody at the scene and transported to a hospital for treatment of his injuries before being charged. Sandra Trappen, the neighbor whose yard he was found in, said she was stunned to discover the suspect had been hiding on her property. "He had found a way to conceal himself, but apparently he was injured and bleeding," she recalled.

Assistant Superintendent Victor Joseph of the Allegheny County Police Department characterized the scene as exceptionally brutal. "It was a very violent scene," he said. "The bedroom furniture was broken, mirrors broken. It was a very graphic scene." Police have not identified a clear motive for the attack. Joseph stated that investigators are still working to determine the nature of any relationship between Hemingway and Evans. "We do not know if there was any pre-existing relationship," he said. "The woman did not know this male. We are trying to determine if the two males knew each other."

Hemingway now faces charges of criminal homicide, aggravated assault, burglary, and trespassing. Court records show he had been arrested for burglary in Pittsburgh earlier in the year and was released on a nonmonetary bond—just weeks before the fatal attack on Evans.

Evans held the position of medical director of the Pediatric Critical Care Transport Team at UPMC Children's Hospital and served as an assistant professor of critical care medicine at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. A hospital spokesperson released a statement describing him as "a dedicated caregiver and valued member of our hospital and university communities." The statement asked that the privacy of his family, loved ones, and colleagues be respected during what it called "this difficult time."

Edgewood police, addressing the broader community impact, acknowledged the shock reverberating through what they described as a small, close-knit neighborhood. "You may be sad, angry, anxious, distracted, or just having a hard time making sense of what happened," the department said in a statement. Police urged residents to be thoughtful about what they shared regarding the incident, cautioning that rumors, graphic details, speculation, and photographs could compound the trauma for those directly affected and the wider community.
