在熊本県氷川町の西阿弥陀地区で、江戸時代から続く子どもの健康を祈る地蔵祭りが、震度7の地震と洪水という二重の災害に見舞われた今年も、8月24日に静かに執り行われた。中止を求める声もあったが、地域の人々は「こういう時だからこそ」と祭りの継続を選んだ。人は危機の中でこそ、自分たちを形づくってきた営みの意味を問い直し、そこに明日へ進む力を見出すことがある。伝統とは、嵐の中で灯される小さな火のようなものかもしれない。
