Across three continents and 300 million years of evolutionary distance, researchers have found the same mathematical fingerprint organizing the songs of Bengalese Finches, humpback whales, and human speech — a pattern called Zipfian distribution, where common expressions are short and rare ones grow longer. Published in Science Advances by teams from Edinburgh, Jerusalem, and Tokyo, the discovery suggests that what we once called uniquely human may instead be a universal solution that emerges wherever communication must be learned and passed between generations.
