In the quiet flow of airplane lavatory waste, scientists have found an unexpected sentinel for global disease. A joint US-UK pilot study demonstrated that wastewater collected from transatlantic flights can detect respiratory and enteric pathogens — including specific coronavirus variants — weeks before they register through conventional surveillance.
