For centuries, the brain's electrical storms have unfolded faster than human tools could follow, leaving scientists with only fragments of one of nature's most consequential events. Researchers at the University of Georgia have now built an imaging system capable of watching a seizure unfold in full three dimensions and in real time — borrowing from astronomy the same adaptive optics that sharpen our view of distant stars to clarify what happens inside living tissue.
