In a laboratory in Edmonton, researchers have done what evolution reserved for snails and bears: they have taught a human organ to sleep. The University of Alberta's SNAP compound mimics the hibernation molecules of snails to slow cellular metabolism in non-hibernating tissue, shielding organs from the damage of oxygen deprivation during transplant.
