On a Sunday evening in Seattle, a place built for communal joy became the site of sudden, senseless violence. At the Bite of Seattle food festival, held in the shadow of the Space Needle, gunfire claimed two lives and wounded five others — among them a toddler — shattering the ordinary peace of families gathered simply to share food and company. The shooter remains unidentified, the motive unknown, and the city is left once again to sit with the weight of public spaces turned dangerous.
