For as long as radar has existed, it has been built to see large things — aircraft, ships, missiles — and the proliferation of small commercial drones has quietly exposed a blind spot in that legacy. A team of researchers has now proposed a method that shifts the fundamental question radar asks: not 'how loud is this signal?' but 'does this signal have the shape of something we know?' In doing so, they have achieved detection precision between 93 and 99 percent against real drones in real environments, suggesting that the gap between what flies and what is seen may finally be closing.
