At MIT, researchers have found a way to let objects speak without electricity — pressing, turning, or sliding them reveals different images through a marriage of optics and mechanics printed in a single pass. ShiftLens, developed by graduate researcher Yunyi Zhu and colleagues, revives an ancient human need: objects that communicate their own state. Where electronics corrode, shatter, and drain, pure physics endures. This work asks whether interactivity was ever truly about circuits, or always about the relationship between a hand and a surface.
