For as long as humans have ventured into space, the engineering of survival has overshadowed the engineering of flourishing. A team at MIT has now built a bridge between those two concerns — an interactive atlas called HECIA that maps how the physical choices embedded in a habitat's design ripple outward into the emotional and psychological lives of the people inside it. Developed for long-duration space missions but applicable wherever humans must endure extreme confinement, the platform arrives at a moment when the distance between Earth and our ambitions has never felt shorter — or longer.
