For generations, medicine has treated obesity as a problem of too much wanting — and so the drugs it built were designed to quiet hunger. Now, researchers at UC Berkeley have demonstrated in mice that a decades-old compound called TOFA can shift that logic entirely, prompting the body to burn more of what it already consumes rather than consume less. The finding does not yet belong to human medicine, but it belongs to the longer conversation about what it means to intervene in the body's relationship with energy.
