In the forests of Central Africa, a familiar and fearsome virus has once again crossed from animal to human, this time in a form for which medicine has no approved shield. By late May 2026, the Democratic Republic of the Congo had recorded more than 1,000 suspected Ebola infections and 223 deaths from the Bundibugyo strain, prompting the World Health Organization to declare a global health emergency. The outbreak is a reminder that as humanity presses deeper into wild habitats and accelerates the movement of goods and people across borders, the boundary between animal disease and human disease
