As summer 2021 settled over British Columbia, a fourth wave of COVID-19 arrived wearing an unfamiliar face — younger, more rural, and propelled by a more contagious variant than any that came before. The Delta variant found its footing not in the dense urban corridors where earlier waves had burned, but in the sun-warmed valleys of the Interior, among people in their twenties and thirties who had waited longest for vaccines and perhaps longest to believe the danger was still theirs to carry. It is a reminder that a pandemic does not repeat itself — it adapts, and so must we.
